Service Opportunities
Through participation in community service projects throughout the year, learn about the needs of others in our community. Services include neighborhood cleanup, one-day home builds, making lunches and hot meals for those in need, special holiday events for the community and much more.

Society of St. Vincent DePaul
The mission of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is to seek and help people in need (the poor, the lonely, etc.). SVdP welcomes more volunteers to help respond to the growing needs in our community.
We provide a range of assistance, including help with food/grocery scrip, rent and utility payments, car repairs, bus tokens, emergency hotel stays, etc.; and we coordinate many activities, including the Adopt-A-Family and Giving Tree at Christmas, the weekly collection of Bags in the Basket for Guadalupe Center, a Blanket and Poncho drive in the winter and the collection and assembly of personal hygiene care pack kits for distribution to the homeless in the spring.

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has established a Legislative Advocacy Chapter at St. Mel to bring attention to the root causes of poverty and advocate genuine change. Presently we are focused on early childhood development for children whose lives have turned upside down.
The CRS Lenten Rice Bowl Program is designed to bring awareness of the plight of people around the world to our parish families, children, and adults. Your help is greatly appreciated - please volunteer.

Pope Francis recently spoke highly of us for all the good works we do around the world and St. Pope John Paul II referred to us as “the right arm of the Catholic Church.” Both are or have been members. You can help by joining.

The St. Mel Swim Team is open to registered St. Mel parishioners, ages 5-14. The Spartans compete against other parishes, as part of the San Fernando Valley Catholic Swim League, from September – November.
Tryouts are required for new swimmers, to be held in August, before the start of school. Contact us for team info, summer training options, tryouts, and other important dates.
